Are You Tuned In??

The Internet Cafe is thrilled to welcome Victoria from Let the Son Shine!

"Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires" (Romans 8:5, NIV).

Imagine an old A.M radio. Static and noise are the most common sounds coming from the speakers, but if you twist the dial to just the right spot you can pick up one awesome station that's always worth the while.

Each time you tune in you hear that old familiar voice and each time you walk away feeling better than you did before. Oh how easy it would be to keep that radio playing all day, but with work and family and life, it just isn't always possible. Sure, you could try to find that station on your hand held radio and just pop those ear buds in and go about your day, but life usually requires more attention than all that. So you're more than happy with the time you get to spend tuned in, and when you're away from the radio, you do your best to keep your positive mindset.

Then your day happens.

Fires to put out, dinner to cook, kids to discipline, siblings to chat with, friends to lunch with, life to deal with, and before you know it your mindset has shifted just like the dial on that old radio. Slipping ever so slowly out of that sweet spot you so carefully sought after, replaced with static and noise.

Isn't that just what living for Christ is like?

You wake up, tune into God's word during your devotional time, and leave feeling refreshed. You pray, you fellowship with the Lord, you pick up on His signal, you receive His message and you go about your day, positive mindset in tow. Then life happens and soon you're only hearing static and noise.

That's your sin nature. Desiring to be left alone, to not have to handle the latest family crisis, to crawl back into bed instead of face another day, to lie to get out of a sticky situation instead of face it with humility. You don't have to tune into any certain station to hear the muddled sounds of the flesh, they just happen to be the most common sounds on life's airwaves.

You wouldn't keep the radio dial set on static, and you don't have to keep your mind set to static either. Just as you would seek out your favorite radio station, you can seek out the Lord and tune into what the Spirit desires. Praise God for making sure that our spiritual radios are portable and never interfere with life! We can tune into the Spirit at any point in time, any place in the world, and in the presence of anyone at all!

Live intentionally!

In Him,

Victoria

Victoria loves capturing pieces of the world around through photography and finds purpose, value, and peace in knowing that our faithful Savior uses even the most broken vessels to deliver His message. Encouraging other women who seek to follow Christ brings with it a blessed sense of accountability that helps to keep her in the Word– especially on those days when the laundry might just sprout legs and “dinner” starts to feel like a four-letter word. You can find Victoria writing devotionals and sharing this and that at her website, Let the Son Shine. She also joins a group of Godly women in writing bi-weekly devotionals over at Exemplify Online and is the Bible Study Columnist for Exemplify Magazine.

In the peace just before bedtime and when we first wake up, tuning in to the Lord isn't difficult but it can be challenging during the day. I have a 35 year old son who is mentally and physically challenged and my days are often filled with .....things that most parents of an adult don't have to deal with. Even if it's just for a minute here and a minute there, I try to tune in and enjoy touching base with him and keeping him as part of our everyday lives. Even when I'm not faithful in that, I know he still cares and watches over us but I feel a LOT better when I make the effort.

God bless you and the other barristas for encouraging the everday Christian woman.

Excellent post and oh so true. Sometimes I forget to tune back into the Spirit during the day when stuff starts happening. Thanks so much for the reminder.

I love this analogy with an AM radio. I will remember it when I have those times when I get so caught up in the day to day world. I always want to be tuned it to my Lord, no matter what may happen each day. Thank you for this post.
