Is Your Easter Chocolate Covered?

In a world where a jolly obese man named Santa trumps Jesus every year, it is not a surprise that The Resurrection is in the shadow of a bunny delivering eggs.

We live in a crazy mixed-up place.

Easter is what it is. You can’t get around it, really. Oh, the world tries. The Savior dying on a wooden cross isn’t marketable and doesn’t make very much money. It’s ugly. It’s uncomfortable.

It’s not easy like chocolate bunnies and marshmallow peeps.

My daughter’s second grade class ignored Easter last year. That bothered me. She missed the egg hunt, I missed the reason for the egg hunt. Does ignoring it make it go away? Even in the Bible belt, there is a struggle to be politically correct.

It was just a big reminder that teaching my children about The Resurrection is up to me. My husband and I can’t leave it up to Sunday School or television and certainly not the schools. It’s our job.

Now, don’t misunderstand me. We fill up the Easter baskets to the brim with all things unhealthy and bunny-ish. I am personally devastated if I don’t eat at least one peanut-chocolate-egg-shaped morsel of deliciousness. We are human after all.

But could my kids articulate the importance of Easter? Do they really know what it’s all about? Are we doing our job?

So, I asked them.

My daughter recited the story with amazing accuracy. I knew she would. I whispered a prayer, “God move it to her heart. Help her to understand Your sacrifice. Remind her that You are always with her because You are Alive.”

The little boy in my life said, “Sure. I know all about Easter. It’s God’s anniversary. AND we get candy!”

I chuckled a little. I can NEVER predict what he’ll say. “The anniversary to----“ I prodded.

“You know, Mom, HIS anniversary to it ALL,” and by the way his eyes shone and his emphasis on the word ‘ALL,” I knew he got it too.

As Easter draws near this Spring, I’m going to focus more than ever on the The Savior who died for me and the tomb that is empty. I want to remember His sacrifice and lead my children to the scars on His palm.

John 20:3-8
3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen.8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.

You are so right. All to often the meaning of Easter and Christmas are over ridden by the falsities, the worldly ways. Yes it is fun to have fun, but just so long as we remember the real reasons for the seasons. Loved your post. Blessings to you.

I love your little boys response! Children have such a beautiful way to express their understanding of our God! I hope this Easter will bring you and your family greater intimacy with the Father.

So true. I always enjoy your reading. I love teaching my children about the gospel. I love the Lilies and Tulips this time of year too. The church was always decorated so beautiful with spring flowers. Made me think of his life everlasting!!

A grandma at church was talking about her granddaughter. She had gone to an Easter egg hunt and ended up with an empty egg. Instead of whining that her egg was empty, she was all excited and yelled "Look, my egg is empty, just like the tomb!" She is not yet 5 - kids get it and sometimes they get it better than adults!!

HE is Risen - HE is Risen indeed!
