Sticky Reminder

~Please welcome our NEWEST team member Laura Lee Shaw to the Cafe! We are blessed to have her as part of this ministry! WELCOME LAURA LEE!~

It was as if the Lord stuck a post-it note on my forehead this morning, a sorely needed reminder.

As our daughter heard her daddy’s voice, she came running down the stairs squealing, “Daddyyyyyyy!” She ran up and gave him a gynormous hug, then took a step back, looked up at him and said, “I’m getting almost as tall as you.” Then, pause…freeze… “Daddy, you’re not as tall as you used to be…”

The conversation went on, but those were the words that stuck with me and now loom in my mind:

“Daddy, you’re not as tall as you used to be…”

I can’t help it. The comparison is a sticky one. Deep down in the depths of my soul, is God still as tall as He used to be? Is He still as large and big and great as He once was?

For some reason I cannot scrape this subject from the forefront of my mind. It’s coming up over and over and over again. How can we become more mature as believers without becoming ‘wise guys’ in our own eyes? How can we see the Lord as big when life’s problems seem bigger? Is it possible to stay relevant and reverent at the same time? How do we keep Him tall?

Post-it note: God IS bigger than life itself. God IS greater than life itself. And the Lord God Almighty IS sovereign over life itself, and anything and everything in it. He is reverently relevant, remarkably so, and it is ridiculous not to remember so.

Deuteronomy 4:32-35, NIV

The Lord is God

Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created man on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other.

Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of?

Has any other people heard the voice of God speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived?

Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by miraculous signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds, Like all the things the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?

You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God;
Besides Him there is no other.

I read this and I asked myself, “What has the LORD my God done for me before my very eyes?” No, I have not heard His voice speak out of fire, but I most certainly have been rescued from it. His miracles and wonders have worked in my life physically, emotionally and spiritually. I have felt the control of His mighty hand and the comfort of His outstretched arm. I have seen His awesome deeds displayed all around me in creation and through life’s circumstances.

What about you? What has He done for you? What has He shown you? If you cannot think of anything, sit down and ask Him to put lenses on the eyes of your heart so you see what’s gone unnoticed before.

And if you know all this, and have seen all this, is your awe of Him still alive and kicking? Or do you somehow believe that He’s not as tall as He used to be? In the dailyness, have you made Him too everyday?

If you’re like me, sometimes you’d like to think that as you know Him better that you’re getting almost as tall as He is…kind of like a kid to his parents. Makes sense, right? You grow spiritually, so you see more of Him, and then you grow to be more like Him…thus, taller.

But it’s the opposite: The more we know of Him and grow spiritually, the taller He is and the shorter we are. It’s counter-cultural, but it’s true. How many times have we quoted the verse, “He must become greater, I must become less…”? (John 3:30)

Do we mean it? Do I mean it? Do I believe it?

It was as if the Lord stuck a post-it note on my forehead this morning, and now it is etched on the walls of my heart.

May I never, ever forget to remember. May He help me remember how to not forget.

May His greatness stick to our minds but flow freely from our lips. And may He receive all the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

"O Sovereign LORD, You have begun to show to Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works You do?”
Deuteronomy 3:24

In Him,

God is so great! I'll remember this often as my kids are anxious to pass me up and rival their dad's height. LoL.

Great post-it for me today!
Thanks!

Oh, so wonderful. God is so "amazingly tall," but we forget. Praying I will NEVER forget, and always glorify Him.

As I was reading, I could not help but look at the human cycle and the teenage stage of "know-it-all-my-parents-are-in-the-dinosaur-age"...but that's what it is..a stage of growth...we learn later that indeed we don't know half as much as our parents and they DID know what they were talking about...

As I was writing that post for your giveaway today, I was reminded to treat His Word as the LAST, enduring word. None other will last. He always was, is, and will be 'greater' than all we can ever imagine, and you are right, as we grow to know Him the 'bigger' He gets, and the humbler we become.
(So glad I had a 'forced' writing session today!) Blessings.

LauraLee, awesome post! It serves as a powerful reminder to keep God in proportion to ourselves (He is more, we are less). Thank you so much for sharing your post-it note with us!

Hey sister!

I LOVED this! As I was reading, the Holy Spirit reminded me of Deuteronomy 4:7:

"For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon Him?"

And yes, sister may reverence for our awesome God NEVER be forgotten and may His praise always proceed out of our mouths!

Thank you dear sister! Wonderful devo today!

Bless you!
Sunny
