Dehydration

The Internet Cafe welcomes Stacy Edwards today!

I’m tired.

So, I sat before God and just had some heart-to-heart time. My devotional this morning was from Samuel and it talked about how Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life (1 Samuel 7:15.) This was the job that God had given to Samuel and he did it his whole life. That is such an important thing to realize…when you are a follower of Christ…you are committing to follow Him all the days of your life. When you are on such a journey…you’re going to get tired. This is no surprise to God.

Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. -Matthew 11:28 HCSB

God knew that we would get tired…that the journey would be long…that the path is not always easy. He will be our rest…but we must come to Him.

So, back to my morning…I finish my make-up, get dressed and begin packing lunches for the girls and this thought popped into my head. Now, I hesitate to say God spoke to me because I know that phrase is thrown around a lot…however, I’m pretty certain that I would not have made this connection on my own…

I suddenly remembered a conversation I had with my husband…probably over six months ago. He had mentioned that He would often get tired in the early afternoon and that he read somewhere that this could be caused by dehydration…hence the title. So, I’m just contemplating dehydration…my weariness…and a possible need for more water in my life…when I am reminded of the passage in Jeremiah that I read last night.

For My people have committed a double evil: They have abandoned Me, the fountain of living water, and dug cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water. - Jeremiah 2:13 HCSB

Our physical bodies were created with a need for water…without water we can become lethargic and fatigued…without it for too long and we would die. When I started making the connection to our spiritual lives…I got so excited! I could not wait to write about it. For our spiritual lives to thrive we need the living water and, in order to receive the living water, we must come to Him. When we attempt to go about our lives without Him…we become tired and weary.

I love the imagery of God as a fountain and us as cracked cisterns. When we immerse ourselves in God and His Word…the water is constantly flowing over us…refreshing us and giving us energy. The problem comes when we think okay, I’m feeling good…I can step away and handle it on my own for awhile. You see, we are just broken cisterns. So, the moment we walk away from God…the water leaks out through the cracks and, in no time at all, we’re dry…and dehydration = weariness.

O God, you are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you,
my body longs for you,
in a dry and weary land
where there is no water.
- Psalm 63:1 NIV

Dry and weary…there is definitely a connection. God is amazing.

Lord, we are so grateful that you are aware of us and our weaknesses. Thank you for inviting us to come to you for rest and refreshment. You are an amazing God and we are blessed to live under the protection of Your hand.

Are you feeling tired or weary?

Have you been to the Father to partake of the living water which refreshes and revives?

How do you know when you are beginning to get dry?

What are some specific ways that you are able to refresh yourself?

In Him,

Stacy Edwards

So fitting for me as I'm in a time of transition. I am dry and weary and dehydrated. Over the past few days the Lord has been leading me back to Him. Thank you for this devotion, another confirmation that I can be restored spiritually. Thanks so much.

I really connected with these words in a powerful way this morning. First, don't shy away from saying that God spoke to you. God does speak to us and in various ways. The Holy Spirit stirs in us and there are times when we just know those thoughts did not come from ourselves.

Second, what a beautiful devotional and I thank you. All to often I forget that I'm not meant to go this alone. I wonder at times why I feel so lonely or isolated. It's not because God has abandoned me as a dry cracked cistern. It's because this dry cracked cistern thought she could get up and do it on her own. Part of being obedient to God is knowing just how much I depend on the living water of the Lord to keep me fluid.
