A Modern Day Samaritan

A few weeks ago, on the way home from work, my sweet husband had quite a frustrating experience. Some guy, who was turning left into four possible lanes, decided to swing out to his right in order to make his left hand turn. Naturally, my husband honked and lifted his hands to say, "what are you doing?" In doing so he drifted a bit to his left which led him straight into the median. Well, apparently his tire exploded because when he came down off of the median he was on rim.

The car is his grandmother's '84 Buick LeSabre that only has 86,000 miles on it and is in pretty pristine condition. It also has hubcaps, Buick hubcaps. Most cars usually have hubcaps that just popped right off. These were not popping off. As he pulled it loose on one side it would close up on the other. He worked on it for about fifteen minutes getting more and more frustrated as the traffic kept going right on by. Are you conjuring up images of the story of the Good Samaritan yet?

Just as he was about to take the crowbar and treat the car to a nice "walk around", someone finally came up behind him and said, "can't get it off." He explained to my sweet husband how to pop off the center cap and loosen the bolt holding it on. The hubcap slid right off.

"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers? The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise." Luke 36,27

How often do we act like the first two people in the Good Samaritan story instead of the third? How often do we "assume" everything is ok? How often do we pass up an opportunity to be a servant to those around us?

God calls us to be servants. It is a major theme throughout the Gospels and the New Testament. In fact it was the very essence of who Christ was.

"...just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Matthew 20:28
Oh Father, as we strive to walk in the fullness that is Christ, may we ever endeavor to be servants to those around us so that they can see Jesus in us.

Stop by and visit sometime... it'll be a joy!

Great Post!
. . . There's a theme going here. Last week's meme ("It's not about me.") . . . Amy's words about hearing God's voice to step up. . . A modern-day Good Samaritan account? . . . We have become an increasingly selfish society. Christians too! (Maybe moreso.) I -- for one -- have been challenged. "My eye's are open today, Lord, and my heart is receptive."

Is praying for an opportuninty to minister to someone in need anything like praying for patience??!!!
:-)
Thanks, Chelsy for a thoughful post.

I agree that this world is easy to get wrapped up in. How hard it is to think about the other people around us. We're taught to share, but are we really taught to care unselfishly?

I'm working on weekly personal missions myself and sharing them on my blog graceonamission.blogspot (just click on my name if you want to check out my blogs).

I just started this and am already finding it hard to pinpoint where God is trying to focus my attention and this week to be something of a Good Samaritan like your devotion prompts.

Funny how God shows up in your life... I guess this is affirmation to me on something I need to be working on..

Blessings.. Suz

So sorry that happened to your husband but thankful the Lord prompted someone to take the opportunity to help him. I pray I am willing and obedient when He calls me. Great post, Chelsey.

Sorry about hubby's mishap. Glad a good reminder came out of it.
I want to be more in tune with those moments in my life when God wants me to "act" not pass on by.

Thanks for sharing!
