Watching Faith Grow
We got a phone call the other day.
The dreaded kind.
The family member asked us to pray for our nephew who was facing a frightening diagnosis after some very disturbing tests.
I hesitated telling my kids about their cousin. I knew they would have questions I couldn't answer.
But I also wanted to give them the opportunity to pray.
Because my fourteen year old nephew needed it.
We joined together as a family the night before the important doctor's visit and we prayed. My hubby led us, with my son tucked under his arm and my daughter leaning on my shoulder.
I stopped to listen because I heard the most beautiful sound:
The fervent prayers of my children, asking God to heal their cousin and friend.
Their prayers were simple. Thorough. Heart-felt and faith-filled.
It moved me deeply.
I kept thinking about Matthew 7:7-8
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened."
Two days passed. Then we got the call.
The neurologist altered the diagnosis, prescribed some helpful medicine and came up with a treatment plan.
I thought maybe it was a simple misdiagnosis or a mistake.
But I couldn't wait to tell me kids! I knew this would strengthen their young faith in God.
They jumped up and down and immediately said, "God did this! He healed him just like we prayed."
They never doubted God for a minute.
I thought I was teaching them.
It turns out I was watching my own faith grow.

I have learned so many lessons through my children. Making my statements of simply being an example before others hold true. Thank you for your story of answered prayer.
Yup, the effective fervent prayers of the righteous, the simple language of God's love from the heart. It doesn't get any better than that. Great post and encouragement.
I am always amazed at the faith my kids have and the way if i listen they teach me. and yeah for your nephew.

Many times the strength and depth of my children's simple faith has brought me to tears and put me to shame. Kids understand more than we give them credit for. Thank you for a beautiful story!

What a precious thing! So great that your children really 'get it' and sooo great that your nephew gets to be the recipient of God's grace.
How heartwarming. That is great news! Yes! God is Good! Just goes to show that the enemy may be striking in some areas, but is doing so Many Positive things in life. Prayers are being answered left and right. Praise the Lord for the healng of your nephew. Thank You Lord!

Kristen, as you might recall, I posted a link about my nephew on your blog (where you had other links of precious children needing prayer). So much of what you wrote in this blog relates to what we're dealing with as well. What's so amazing and is such a God thing is that a friend of mine forwarded this devotional to me because it reminded her of my nephew! (I hadn't gotten over here in a couple of days so I hadn't see it yet.) God is SO GOOD! AMEN? AMEN!
Isn't it amazing how God uses our children to teach us? The faith of children is unwaivering. Unquestionable.
There was a time when my daughter (6) was sick with a belly ache. Like most people, she does not like, well, you know...throwing up. So, when she came to a point when she was about to, then didn't, she gave credit to God for stopping it from coming. For a second, in my own mind, I thought, "no, she was just mistaken about throwing up." Then I caught myself and thought, "No. God probably did stop it. What am I thinking?!" We are too quick sometimes to give credit else where or even write it off as just a mistake, when really, God is doing His thing! Praise God for children! They really are a blessing!
