Wonder Woman

My obsession with Wonder Woman started with a birthday gift – Wonder Woman Underoos.

As a little girl, I put them on in my room and tried to spin as fast as I could. I was confident I could turn into Wonder Woman if only I could spin fast enough. When that didn’t work, I fashioned my own “bullet-proof” bracelets from toilet paper tubes and tin foil.

Still no luck.

After years of intensive study and investigation, I found Wonder Woman and I are just alike. I never discovered the secret to the spin transformation, but I did learn how to transform. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV) Our similarities don’t end there.

Wonder Woman can do more than the average gal. Have you seen her leap over tall fences? She has super strength. And so do I. Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. (Ephesians 6:10 NIV) I haven’t been leaping over fences, but I can move mountains.

Wonder Woman is never seen without her golden lasso of truth fastened securely at her waist. She swings the lariat over her head and tosses it around bad guys. Those bound by it are forced to reveal the truth. I, too, have truth fastened tightly at my waist. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. (v. 14-15)

How about those bulletproof bracelets I tried to create? Toilet paper tubes are a thing of the past. I’ve finally figured out my own secret weapon – faith. I may not deflect bullets, but I can extinguish fiery arrows. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (v. 16)

And let’s not forget Wonder Woman is known for her exceptional hand-to-hand combat ability. She is ready to take on any and all forces of evil. I stand at the ready, as well, to battle the evil one with my mighty sword. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. (v. 17-18)

Do you see it now?

Wonder Woman and I are interchangeable.

Looks like I get to be a super hero after all – no spinning necessary.

Excellent way to tie Wonder Woman with our spiritual armor (see Ephesians 6)! You could teach a class on this!
