My Daddy Can Do Anything

“My daddy can do anything,” Faith exclaimed. Her eyebrows scrunched up and her hands on her hips, this four-year old meant business. My son and daughter noticed the decorations on top of the kitchen cabinets. They wondered aloud how they got all the way up there. “Daddy put them up there,” I explained as I walked through the kitchen. “I bet he has to stand in a chair,” Colin surmised with the wisdom of a six-year-old. At 6 foot 5 inches, my husband was tall but not tall enough to reach the top of the kitchen cabinets without a little boost.

This is where the argument began. Faith was sure that her daddy did, in fact, not need a chair in which to stand. She was certain of it. “My daddy can do anything,” she told her brother, offended he would say any different. I stepped in to resolve the argument, “Yes, Daddy is very tall and can do lots of things, but he can not reach the top of the cabinets without a chair.”

As I was reading today, I came across the verse about how we need to come to Christ like little children. I always thought the verse referred to the simplicity of accepting Christ. We don’t need to make it complicated. It’s as easy as ABC – Accept Jesus as God’s Son, Believe He died on the cross, and Confess you are a sinner. But today I realized there is more to that verse than knowing your ABC’s. Christ is asking us to come to Him like a child – believing big.

Children believe anything can happen.

They believe in jolly old men who slide down chimneys and bunnies that deliver eggs during the night. They even believe from time to time that their daddies are taller than they seem.

We, on the other hand, put God in a box. We believe He can do some things, but do we truly believe He can do all things? When we hear of a complete healing or divine circumstances, we tend to raise our eyebrows a little. We want to believe, but we look for other explanations. Children believe wholeheartedly without any doubt. I wish for that boldness of faith. Don’t you?

Prayer:

Lord, I am sorry for putting you in a box. I believe that you alone can do anything. I want to have the wholehearted faith of a child. Help me to believe big. Amen.
